The creators of In The Shadow of The Blade proudly announce the premiere and DVD release of A Touch of Home: The Vietnam War's Red Cross Girls.
Join us for this free and open-to-the-public premiere screening and DVD release this Veteran's Day weekend in Washington, DC. Reception preceding the show.
They came of age at the dawn of the women’s movement, stepping out of conventional roles to take a route away from the expected. Young, adventurous, idealistic, and committed, they were a breath of fresh air in the dusty firebases and sweaty base camps of Vietnam. They were the Donut Dollies, and their job was to distract US soldiers on the front lines with games, songs and a listening ear. Heirs to the American Red Cross Supplemental Recreation Overseas program started in World War II, the Vietnam girls didn’t have donut machines, but with a never-ending smile, a listening ear, and a collection of silly games, they delivered a touch of home to the combat zone.
Sister, girlfriend, friend… the Donut Dollies were “round eyes” who brought entertainment, a smiling face, and a reminder of home to millions of young American men who otherwise faced the grim, daily reality of death. It was a year in their lives that would affect each of them forever. A Touch of Home: The Vietnam War’s Red Cross Girls pays tribute to their courage and their actions through their amazing stories and those of the people they helped.
